Joker Card Canada: Balance Check, Fees and Support Guide

Last updated: By: Joker Card CA Help editorial team Facts checked against official cardholder agreements

Bought a Joker prepaid card, or thinking about one? This guide shows you how to check your balance, what the card really costs, where it works and where it doesn't, and what to do if it's declined or drained.

Everything here comes from Joker's own website and published cardholder agreements, plus real reviews from Trustpilot and Canadian finance sites, so you can use your card with fewer surprises.

Quick answer

Joker Card is a non-reloadable prepaid Mastercard or Visa sold across Canada in values from $25 to $500. You can spend it online and in stores wherever Mastercard or Visa is accepted, apart from exceptions such as ATMs and recurring payments, and it is often declined at automated fuel pumps. To check your balance, go to cardholder.jokercard.ca and enter your 16-digit card number and the security code (CVV) shown on your card or virtual card email, or call the toll-free number on the back of your card. Customer reviews are poor (1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot), so check the balance as soon as you buy.

What is Joker Card?

Joker Card is a Canadian prepaid payment card. You pay for it up front at a store or online, and it works like a debit card up to the amount loaded on it, with no bank account or credit check involved. You must be the age of majority in your province or territory to buy one.

The program is run by Blackhawk Network, the prepaid card company behind many of the gift card racks in Canadian stores. The Mastercard versions are issued by Peoples Trust Company. The Visa version launched in February 2023 in partnership with Equitable Bank, which issues it.

  • Physical cardJoker Original, Green and GamersPlastic cards sold on retail racks, for in-store and registered online use.
  • Virtual cardVirtual Joker Prepaid CardBought on GiftCards.ca with a Visa or Mastercard credit card, delivered by email after up to 48 hours of fraud screening, and used online only.
  • Virtual cardScanItBought by scanning a QR code at select retailers, with a $7.95 purchase fee plus tax.

Joker Card also advertises up to 5% cash back at featured merchants. The list of merchants changes, so check jokercard.ca for the current offers.

Joker Card ratings and real cardholder reviews

Customer reviews of Joker Card are overwhelmingly negative, while expert reviewers treat it as a legitimate but expensive and limited product. Here is where it stands as of September 2026.

What cardholders report most often

These are the themes that repeat across Trustpilot, RatingFacts and creditcardGenius reviews from 2025 and 2026, summarized in our own words.

  • Empty or drained cardsThe most common complaint is a card that shows little or no balance right after purchase or after one use. One Trustpilot reviewer said a $25 card showed 78 cents after activation; others found unopened cards already spent in another region or through a PayPal account they didn't recognize.Trustpilot, October 2025 to March 2026
  • Declines despite a balanceMany reviewers say the card was declined online and in stores even though the balance page showed funds, with Amazon, subscriptions and streaming services named most often.Trustpilot and RatingFacts, 2025 to 2026
  • Hard to reach a personReviewers describe fully automated phone lines, long waits and calls that drop before reaching an agent, plus no French-language support in one case.Trustpilot, January to August 2026
  • Registration and ID checksSeveral reviews describe registration errors, and one objected to being asked for a photo of government ID and a selfie during verification.Trustpilot, January to September 2026
  • Expired cards and disputesSome cardholders struggled to get a replacement for an expired card, and one missed the 60-day dispute window on a card drained before they noticed.Trustpilot, February 2026
  • When it worksThe rare positive reviews come from people who used the card for straightforward purchases. One five-star reviewer in July 2026 reported no problems buying on eBay.Trustpilot, July 2026

Review sites attract people with problems more than satisfied customers, so treat these ratings as a picture of what can go wrong rather than of the typical purchase. Many of the empty-card reports match the rack-tampering scam described below rather than a fault in the card itself.

Pros, cons and who Joker Card suits

Pros

  • Sold at over 11,000 stores, no bank account or credit check
  • Works wherever Mastercard or Visa is accepted, in stores and online
  • Funds never expire, and expired cards are replaced free
  • Keeps your bank card details away from online shops
  • Up to 5% cash back at featured merchants

Cons

  • Purchase fees up to $9.95, about 20% of a $25 card
  • Some cards charge $3 a month after 12 months
  • Not reloadable, so the fee repeats every time
  • No CDIC insurance or Zero Liability protection
  • No ATMs or subscriptions, and often declined at fuel pumps
  • Weak customer reviews on support and drained cards

Joker Card makes sense as a gift, for a one-off online purchase where you would rather not use your bank card, or for someone without a credit card. For everyday spending, the reviews at Savvy New Canadians and Hardbacon both point to reloadable options with no purchase fee, such as the KOHO, EQ Bank, Neo or Wealthsimple cards.

Where to buy a Joker Card, load amounts and fees

Joker Card is sold at more than 11,000 retail locations in Canada, including Canadian Tire, Loblaws, Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall, Staples and The Home Depot, and online at giftcards.ca. Cards carry between $25 and $500 CAD, and you cannot add money later.

A one-time purchase fee is charged when you buy the card. Fees depend on the six-digit agreement number on your card or packaging. Under the Joker Prepaid Mastercard agreement 533985, the fees are:

Card value Purchase fee (agreement 533985)
$25 $4.95
$50 $5.95
$100 $6.95
$200, or a variable $25 to $200 card $7.95
$500, or a variable $200 to $500 card $9.95

Fees are charged once at activation, plus applicable taxes. The agreement notes that purchase fees may be lower at certain retailers.

Other agreements use different scales. For example, agreement 541275 charges $5.95 on a $100 card and $6.95 on a $200 card. The Joker Prepaid Visa under agreement 400012 charges $5.95 on $75 and $100 cards, $6.50 on a $150 card and $7.50 on a $250 card. Newer Visa cards fall under agreement 461126, the one Joker's website currently links, so check that agreement if your card starts with 461126. The Virtual Joker Prepaid Visa costs a flat $7.95 at any value, according to its cardholder agreement. Every version adds a 2.5% foreign exchange fee on purchases in another currency.

Watch for the monthly fee. Cards under Mastercard agreement 533814, which Joker's website still lists, charge a $3.00 monthly maintenance fee starting in the twelfth month after activation, until the balance reaches $0. Agreement 533985 lists no monthly fee. If your card starts with 533814, spend the balance within the first year.

How to activate and register your Joker Card

Physical Joker cards are activated by the cashier when you pay, and the cardholder agreement also asks you to sign the back of the card before use. Keep the receipt until you have confirmed the balance. The card works in stores right away.

Before you shop online, by phone or by mail, register the card with your name and address on the cardholder website. Unregistered cards are often declined for card-not-present purchases, and online checkouts compare the billing address you enter with the registered one.

Where you can use Joker Card

Works

  • In stores where Mastercard or Visa is accepted
  • Online, once the card is registered
  • Split payments, if the merchant agrees
  • Purchases abroad, with a 2.5% foreign exchange fee

Doesn't work

  • Automated fuel pumps (often declined)
  • ATMs and cash withdrawals
  • Recurring payments and pre-authorized debits
  • Reloading or cashing out the balance

Two protections that bank cards have do not apply here: Joker funds are not covered by CDIC deposit insurance, and the Mastercard agreement excludes the card from Mastercard's Zero Liability protection. The largest single purchase is $500. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, unverified cards are limited to $75 CAD per transaction and $225 over the card's lifetime. Becoming a Verified Cardholder, which costs $2.50 from the balance and requires passing an identity check, removes that limit. Hotels, restaurants and car rentals can hold 20% or more above the bill, so leave room on the card.

How to check your Joker Card balance

Keep these details in front of you before opening cardholder.jokercard.ca:

  • 16-digit card numberPrinted on the front of the card, or shown in your virtual card email.
  • Security code (CVV)Usually 3 digits on the back of a physical card. Virtual cards show theirs in the card email; the Virtual Joker Prepaid Mastercard uses a 4-digit CVV2.
  • Expiry datePrinted on the front. Some verification steps ask for it.
  • 6-digit agreement numberOn the packaging. It tells you which cardholder agreement, and which fees, cover your card.
  1. Open your browser and type cardholder.jokercard.ca directly into the address bar rather than following an ad.
  2. Enter your 16-digit Joker Card number.
  3. Enter the security code (CVV) exactly as shown on your card or virtual card email.
  4. Add the expiry date if the form asks for it.
  5. Complete any verification prompt, then review your available balance and recent activity.

Balance checks are free. The balance is shown in Canadian dollars, and a pending purchase may not appear yet, so the number can briefly look higher than you expect.

Phone balance check and support numbers

Each Joker card type has its own toll-free line. The number printed on the back of your card or in your virtual card email is always the one to trust first.

Card type Toll-free support Card issuer
Joker Prepaid Mastercard 1-855-288-0926 Peoples Trust Company
Virtual Joker Prepaid Mastercard 1-833-293-7721 Peoples Trust Company
Joker Prepaid Visa 1-833-250-6810 Equitable Bank
Virtual Joker Prepaid Visa 1-833-778-3580 Equitable Bank

The Joker Prepaid Mastercard agreement describes its line as available 24/7. Have the card in hand when you call, because the agent will need to verify it before sharing the balance.

Transaction history and disputes

Your transaction history on cardholder.jokercard.ca helps you confirm pending charges, match refunds and see exactly where the balance went. If it doesn't load online, the support line for your card can read out recent transactions.

If you see a charge you don't recognize, act quickly. The Mastercard agreement requires you to dispute a transaction in writing within 60 days of the transaction date, using a dispute form from customer service or the dispute page on jokercard.ca. After 60 days the charge is treated as accepted. Refunds go back onto the card, not out as cash.

Expiry and replacement rules

The plastic card has an expiry date printed on the front, and you cannot use the card after that date. The money on it is a different matter: Joker's cardholder agreements state that your right to use the loaded funds does not expire.

If your card expires with money still on it, call the customer service number for your card type and ask for a replacement. The agreements say replacements for expired cards are issued at no cost and carry your remaining balance. If your card is under agreement 533814, the $3 monthly fee may already have reduced that balance.

Why your Joker Card was declined, and how to fix it

  • The card isn't registeredRegister it on the cardholder website before shopping online, by phone or by mail.
  • The purchase is over the balanceAsk the cashier to split the payment: charge the exact card balance, then pay the rest another way.
  • A hold is using up fundsRestaurants, hotels and rentals may pre-authorize 20% or more extra; leave room or wait for the hold to drop.
  • The merchant type is blockedPay inside instead of at the fuel pump, and use another card for subscriptions.
  • The merchant is in Europe or the UKKeep each purchase at or under $75 CAD, or become a Verified Cardholder to lift the limit.
  • The card was never activatedCheck your receipt and contact the store or customer service if activation failed at the register.
  • The balance page won't workRetype cardholder.jokercard.ca, re-enter your card number and security code slowly, or try another browser or device.

Lost or stolen Joker Card

Report a lost or stolen card right away by calling the number for your card type. The cardholder agreements treat transactions made before you report the loss as authorized by you, and prepaid Joker cards are excluded from Mastercard's Zero Liability protection, so every minute counts.

Write down your card number and the customer service number as soon as you receive the card, and store them separately from the card itself.

How to make a complaint

For the Joker Prepaid Mastercard, the cardholder agreement sets out this order:

  1. Joker customer service1-855-288-0926
  2. Peoples Trust complaints department1-855-694-6214
  3. Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments1-888-451-4519
  4. Financial Consumer Agency of Canada1-866-461-3222

Joker Visa cards follow their own steps through Equitable Bank, which are listed in the Visa cardholder agreement.

Gift card draining: how to protect a new Joker Card

Card draining is the most likely explanation for a new card that shows no money. Criminals take cards off store racks, copy the card numbers, hide the tampering with fake stickers and put the cards back. When a shopper activates one, the thieves spend the balance within minutes.

The problem is growing across all gift card brands, not just Joker. According to Yahoo Finance Canada, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recorded $6.8 million in reported gift card losses in 2024, up from $3.8 million in 2021. As one example of how rack tampering works, in May 2026 Halton Regional Police arrested two men in Mississauga after an investigation called Project Reload, which began at a Burlington store and seized about 5,700 prepaid gift cards linked to over $1 million in potential losses. Police did not name the card brands involved.

  • Buy cards kept behind the counter or in a locked display when you can.
  • Check the packaging for lifted stickers, glue marks or torn cardboard before you pay.
  • Check the balance on cardholder.jokercard.ca as soon as the card is activated, and spend it soon.
  • Keep the receipt until the balance is used up.
  • If the card is empty, call the Joker support line for your card, tell the store, and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Joker Card security tips

Treat your card details like cash. Anyone with the card number, security code and expiry date can spend your balance online.

  • Type jokercard.ca or cardholder.jokercard.ca directly instead of clicking search ads or links in messages.
  • Never post your card number or security code on forums, social media, or in photos.
  • Ignore websites or callers that ask for a fee to check your Joker Card balance. Official balance checks are free.
  • Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay a bill, tax or fine with a Joker Card. Legitimate organizations don't ask for prepaid cards.
  • Keep the physical card somewhere secure when you are not using it.
